COLORFUL FISH ON GARAGE DOOR

COLORFUL FISH ON GARAGE DOOR
A vibrant collection of tropical fish swimming across a residential garage door, transforming a utilitarian surface into a slice of coral reef. The piece brings marine color and movement to a neighborhood street, turning the most mundane part of a house into its most memorable feature.

Artist's Note
“Garage doors are the most overlooked surfaces in residential architecture. They're huge, they face the street, and most people just paint them beige. I saw an opportunity to bring the ocean to a landlocked neighborhood.”
— Rachel Dinda
Inspiration
Tropical reef fish are nature's graffiti artists — impossibly bright, boldly patterned, unapologetically vivid. I wanted to channel that same fearless use of color onto a surface that usually avoids attention.
The Process
Garage doors flex and move, so the paint needs to be flexible too. I used high-quality exterior latex with extra binder, applied in thin coats to prevent cracking. Each fish was painted individually with its own color story, then I unified them with flowing water elements between.
Community Impact
The neighbors stop and watch whenever the door goes up and down — the fish seem to swim as it moves. It's started conversations about commissioning more residential murals in the area.
