Artist's Note
“Haiti changed me as an artist. The warmth, creativity, and resilience of the people I worked with there made me rethink everything about what public art can mean. This portrait isn't of one person — it's an embodiment of the spirit I encountered in every community I visited.”
— Rachel Dinda
Inspiration
The women of Haiti carry their communities with extraordinary grace. Their strength, despite every challenge, demanded to be celebrated at this scale. The blue and red tones reference Haiti's national flag.
The Process
Working in Haiti required adaptability — materials were limited, the heat was intense, and every day brought surprises. I used whatever quality paint I could source locally, supplemented by supplies I brought from the States. The turquoise building became my background rather than fighting against it. Community members helped with prep work and kept me supplied with water and encouragement.
Community Impact
The building has become a point of pride for the neighborhood. Residents tell me they see themselves in the portrait, which is the highest compliment I could receive. International visitors have shared photos that have brought attention to the community's vitality and creativity.
