CATRINA AT THE POOL

CATRINA AT THE POOL

A Dia de los Muertos Catrina figure set against a sunset sky with swaying palm trees, painted poolside at La Patrona in Colorado Springs. The piece bridges Mexican cultural tradition with resort relaxation, creating an atmosphere that's both celebratory and serene.

Artist's Note

The Catrina is one of the most recognizable symbols in Mexican art, and placing her by a pool felt like an interesting contrast — death imagery in a place of leisure. But Dia de los Muertos isn't about mourning; it's about celebrating life, which is exactly what a poolside should feel like.

Inspiration

La Patrona's Mexican heritage and the warmth of the poolside setting called for something that honored tradition while feeling fresh and inviting. The sunset palette naturally complemented the Catrina's floral crown.

The Process

Poolside painting comes with unique challenges — humidity, splash zones, and surfaces that need extra prep for adhesion. I sealed the wall thoroughly before starting, then worked in the early mornings before the Colorado sun made the paint dry too fast to blend.

Community Impact

Guests photograph this mural constantly. The restaurant has incorporated Catrina imagery into their branding since the mural went up, and their Dia de los Muertos celebration has become their biggest annual event.
