Artist's Note

Sugar skulls are art objects in themselves — every line and color carries meaning. Painting one at salon scale let me explore that ornamental detail at a level that felt like meditation. The pink palette was the salon owner's bold choice, and it works perfectly.

— Rachel Dinda

Inspiration

Day of the Dead celebrates the beauty in remembrance. In a salon — a place dedicated to personal transformation and self-expression — the sugar skull felt like a natural bridge between cultural tradition and contemporary beauty culture.

The Process

The intricate patterns required steady hands and long hours of detail work. I laid out the skull's symmetry with careful measurements, then filled in the decorative elements freehand to keep them feeling organic rather than mechanical. The hot pinks and magentas were mixed custom to match the salon's interior.

Community Impact

The mural has become the salon's signature. Clients share photos of it constantly, and it's helped La Patrona develop a strong visual identity that celebrates their Mexican heritage.
